General notes
Butterworth & Dickinson started out as a loom manufacturing business by Samuel Dickinson and John Butterworth, in 1871.
During the first and second world wars, their operations were commandeered by the Royal Navy to manufacture shells for its war ships (as can be seen here).
At its height the company was spread over a number of sites around the town including premises on Saunder Bank, the Globe Iron Works on Trafalgar Street and a site in the Rosegrove area.
