The company was started by Cornelius Eatough at a shop on Sandygate, in 1907. The firm originally sold equipment for decorating to the public. Around c1950, the company began to manufacture its own paints in premises at Caldervale. This also brought about a change to the name to Dexter paints, which was chosen from a phone directory.

Prior to Dexter Paints occupation of this building , it had had various occupiers, including an eating house and residential use.
