General notes
The first church service held here was on the 24th February 1878. The church had been built as part of a planned expansion of Anglican churches across the borough. The land and some of the funds for its construction has been provided by Miss Halstead of nearby Hood House.
Fire destroyed St. Matthew's Church on Christmas Day 1927 (seen here). However, by February 1929 work had already commenced on rebuilding the Church.
