General notes
Salem Congregational Chapel was formed by a breakaway group of members from the Bethesda Church. They used a number of temporary places for worship, before this chapel was constructed on Manchester Road. At the time it was built it stood alone, giving it an air of stern isolation.
For the next century the chapel was regularly closed for maintenance and alteration works. This included the construction of an organ in 1885. In 1969, due to spiralling reparation costs, the chapel closed. The organ was purchased by Neville Blakey and some of the pipe work was used in Colne Parish Church. In 1973 the building was sold and subsequently demolished and replaced by an office block.
