General notes
Milnthorpe is a little to the north of Beetham and, as now, was a bustling market town.
There was also a small port, but after the building of the railway viaduct at Arnside, the Furness railway had to build a pier at Arnside as compensation for stopping vessels reaching Minthorpe. This was mainly due to silting rather than obstruction, as the viaduct contained an opening span which was never used.
