General notes
This view shows Arnside and the railway viaduct. The Furness Railway crossed the estuary on the viaduct which is 522 yards in length which is almost 3 times the height of Arnside Knott. According to Bulmers Directory of Westmorland 1885, out of its total length of 19 miles and 2 chains there are 10 miles and 10 chains of sea embankment and three-quarters of a mile of viaduct.
It cost upwards of £22,000 per mile to build, and about 1,000 acres of land were reclaimed from the sea. There are 50 piers and 51 arches. Each pillar is capable of supporting over 20 tons. In this view a few houses are visible at Arnside; today they are hidden by trees.
