General notes
This is a lovely view of Leighton Hall from the park, and there seem to be an avenue of trees on either side of the driveway and entrance to the hall, which are no longer there. The history of this estate can be traced back to 1246 when a fortified manor house stood here. The later house was rebuilt in the Adam style by George Towneley of Towneley Hall, who also replanted the woods and laid out the park in 1763. The house was refaced in limestone about 1800 in the Gothick style, by Alexander Worswick of Ellel Grange. It then came into the hands of his cousin Richard Gillow in 1822. Since the land was granted to Adam DAvranches in 1173 the property has had only 26 owners but only twice has ownership passed by sale.
