General notes
Waddington is a village 2 miles north west of Clitheroe. The Old Hall is in the centre of the village.
The greater part of the medieval building is still in existence. It was here where King Henry VI took refuge after the great battle of Hexham in 1464; he was captured and died confined to the Tower of London.

The Old Hall was in use as a farmhouse in the mid 19th century but was restored by John Waddington in 1901. The original walls and windows with their great depth can still be seen in the Great Hall, adjoining hall and the Monks Room. Other rooms have been extended and a modern wing has been added, built in similar grey stone in keeping with old building. The entrance gates have the arms of John Waddington 1900.

This photograph shows the Great Hall, which served also as the Dining Hall, and which spans the entire depth of the building, panelled in oak and furnished with a beautiful oak dining table and carved chairs. Although not seen in this image the tapestry of the chairs bears the Royal Arms of Henry VI, surmounted by a crown and decorated with a golden salamander and the fleur-de-lys (which was included because Henry VI laid claim to the crown of France).
