General notes
The Chapel on Church Road consecrated in 1781, was enlarged in 1822 with a gallery added in 1851. The population was 709. In 1859 the chapel was dedicated to the memory of St. Paul and became the parish church. By 1878 the population had grown to 5000 and owing to dangerous subsidence closed in 1896. It was demolished in 1905. The new St. Paul's Church was built, by subscription, near to the site of the Chapel starting in 1903.
