General notes
George Testo Sante took over the wooden theatre on the cattle market in 1894. After remodelling it was reported to be the finest wooden theatre in
England.
On 16th March 1914, after the evening performance, the theatre was destroyed by fire. Very little of the fabric of the building was covered by insurance and Sante was left with a loss of around £5000.
A pantomime company with 36 members was even less fortunate loosing everything in the fire. A charity event was held in the town at the end of March to help them.
