General notes
Taken at the corner of Melville Street and Briercliffe Road showing part of the Elim Methodist Church. The church has since been demolished and replaced.

Only 100 years earlier this area would have been farmland. Briercliffe Road ran through this farmland, up to the hamlets of Lane Head and the parish of Briercliffe. The first mill in the area, Rake Head, arrived in c1840. This along with the later arrivals of the Workhouse and the Victoria Hospital helped development of the area and led to the construction of many rows of terraced houses and shops.
