The 'knocker up' was a man whose resposibility it was to wake up mill workers and miners on work days. The tools of the trade were a long pole with either bamboo or wire on the end which was used to tap on upstairs windows and some shorter poles which could be used to hammer on people's front doors. They wouldn't stop until they knew the person was fully awake. Earning around 5p for each household they awakened, this practice continued until the 1970's.
