General notes
Miss Ada Appleton opened this Watchmakers and Jewellers shop at 26 Manchester Road in c1903. The shop was located in the block of buildings between Red Lion Street and Grimshaw Street.

Ada was born in 1858 in Rainton, Yorkshire. When she left school she started to work as a Jewellers assistant. By 1891, Ada had moved to Burnley and was lodging on Parker Lane, whilst continuing to work as a Jeweller's assistant in one of the town's shops. Ten years later she was the manageress of her own shop.

In c1916, her nephew Matthew Appleton (possibly the man in the photograph), came over from Yorkshire to work at her shop. He married Joanna Foden in 1918 and continued to work at the shop until around the time of Ada's death in 1927. It's unclear what work he did after that, but he died at the relatively young age of 56 in 1944.
