General notes
A photograph taken from the junction with Melville Street, looking up Briercliffe Road towards Harle Syke. On the right one can see the Briercliffe Road Methodist Church, which has since been demolished.
Only 100 years earlier this area would have been farmland. Briercliffe Road ran through this farmland, up to the hamlets of Lane Head and the parish of Briercliffe. The first mill in the area, Rake Head, arrived in c1840. This, along with the later arrivals of the Workhouse and the Victoria Hospital, helped development of the area and led to the construction of many rows of terraced houses and shops.
