General notes
This photograph shows Lowerhouse Mill (Dugdale's) after the fire of 1887. The three people in the centre of the photograph are George Ingham on the left, Amy Redmond in the centre and Bertha Redmond on the right. On the back of the photograph the residents of all the houses shown have been labelled as follows by Clara Ingham (b1881);

From left
End of Victoria Terrace, Smith sister's toffee shop
Mrs Whittaker "bone doctor"
Mrs Whittaker
Mrs Howarth and son who married A. Redmond
Mrs Lee
Mrs and Mrs J. Ingham - engineer at Dugdales Mill, two houses made into one in 1881.
Sally Barnes who smoked a long clay pipe
Mr and Mrs Metcalfe
Mr and Mrs Chadband (?)

The gas for the houses was supplied by Dugdales. The gas holders were in the factory and at the bottom of Bear Street.

The mill itself was built in c1836 by local industrialists, the Dugdale brothers. The family dominated the area, constructing a number of facilities for the local residents and mill workers. The mill prospered until the depression in the late 1920's. The business was placed into receivership and was later taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation. They had little success in reviving the mill and it closed for good in 1933, before demolition began three years later.

User feedback:

'I think this was taken after a fire at the mill. See Lowerhouse and the Dugdale's (Brian Hall).'
