General notes

The Union Workhouse opened in 1876. This laundry was added in 1903 along with a number of workshops that could be used by the inmates. The workhouse was appropriated by Burnley Corporation in 1933 and remained in use until its closure in 1948. A number of its buildings were then integrated into the hospital complex.
