J.M.W. Turner's watercolour painting of Towneley Hall before it was remodelled by Jeffry Wyatt 10 years later. The painting was comissioned by Thomas D. Whittaker for his 'History of the Parish of Whalley'.

The Hall was home to the Towneley family for over 500 years. However, when the male line of the family died out it was sold to Burnley Corporation in 1902 and a year later it opened as a museum.
