General notes
The white building on the left was the Blue Bell Inn - a common lodging house (previously to this a pub and before that a dwelling house). It was located at the bottom of Hall Street (or Hall Rake as it was once known) in the Wapping area of Burnley, behind the Palace Theatre. (The name was supposed to derive from 'Moll of Wapping' who lived in the area many years ago.

The remains of Hall Rake Mill can be seen. The building on the right remained until 1962.
It has been suggested that the couple sat on the wall may be John Heaton and Anne Heaton (nee Baldwin).

After the sale of the property in 1874 it became known as the Horse and Farrier and it remained in business until c. 1923.
