Burnley Home Guard on parade in the school yard at Abel Street Primary School.

The home guard, originally known as the Local Defence Volunteers, were men who were not called up for active service for various reasons. These men volunteered to join a local militia that were equipped and trained to defend Britain if an invasion occurred by air, land or sea.
