The hotel was originally built in 1625 and then rebuilt in 1879. Lancashire Archives holds a series of letters sent by Charles Dickens - Reference - DDX 2743 MS 5060 - 5066 . One of the letters is sent on 11 September 1857 from a Hotel in Carlisle to the Kings Arms in Lancaster requesting that a room be booked for Mr Dickens on the following day along with ".....a comfortable dinner for two persons at half past 5". It also goes on to say that "Mr Dickens will be accompanied by his friend Mr Wilkie Collins". During 1857 Dickens and Collins went on a walking tour of Cumberland which was published in Dickens' "Household Words" in October 1857 as "The Lazy tour of Two Idle Apprentices"
