The image looks north-east towards the junction with Church Road. You can see Church Road Methodist Church in the centre-right of the picture.
The newspaper hoarding refers to "How the Goeben Escaped". The SMS Goeben was a battle cruiser of the German Navy launched in 1911. Just as Britain was entering the First World War the Goeben and another vessel, the Breslau evaded British Vessels in the Mediterranean. This dates this image to the August of 1914.
This is one of a set of copies of images (presumably the originals were postcards) that were donated anonymously to St Annes Library in 2011. In spite of publicity in the local newspaper we have had no further information about the donor. If anyone has information about the images or the donor we would be pleased to hear from them.
