General notes
St George's Gardens which was opened in the 1870s became Ashton Gardens in the First World War period when a donation from Lord Ashton (James Williamson) of £21,350 enabled the town to purchase them. "They were officially opened on 1 July 1916 by Coun. Richard Leigh, Chairman of the Council. An additional £3,800 was spent in 1919" From "St Anne's on the Sea: a History" (2008) by Peter Shakeshaft (p.171) This is one of a set of copies of images (presumably the originals were postcards) that were donated anonymously to St Annes Library in 2011. In spite of publicity in the local newspaper we have had no further information about the donor. If anyone has information about the images or the donor we would be pleased to hear from them.
