User feedback: 'At the edge of the road, in the distance behind the people on the photograph, there is a large (tall) metal pipe that resembles a lamppost or a telegraph pole. It is a stink-pipe.
It was manufactured by Allsup & Company Limited Preston. Most of it is still there today. It is just shorter, as the topmost thinner section has been removed.
A 'stink pipe', also know as a 'stack pipe' was a Victorian era sewer vent, which let off methane gas. Sometimes they had lamp on the top and could provide light whilst burning off the gas. This one appears just to be a venting apparatus.' 17/03/2026.
