General notes

The Parish Church of St Anne, from which the town derives its name, was completed in 1877. The laying of the foundation stone was in June 1872 and the consecration in August 1873. The architects were the well-known firm of Paley and Austin of Lancaster.

The tower was added in 1890 and the steeple, which was part of the original building was removed in 1895
