"St Anne's Road West (The Square) looking westward c.1886. The building centre right is now occupied by the Edinburgh Woollen Mill and was built by John Hindle in 1877. In 1932 JH Taylor recalled that the business part of the town in the late 1880s 'consisted of about a dozen shops in the main street, and the six old shops in Garden Street' "
