St George's Gardens which was opened in the 1870s became Ashton Gardens in the First World War period when a donation from Lord Ashton (James Williamson) of £21,350 enabled the town to purchase them.

"They were officially opened on 1 July 1916 by Coun. Richard Leigh, Chairman of the Council. An additional £3,800 was spent in 1919"

From "St Anne's on the Sea: a History" (2008) by Peter Shakeshaft (p.171)

This rustic bridge has been a feature of the gardens since the 1880s.
