In 1812, Roger Carus bought Lunefield on the edge of Kirkby Lonsdale and within three years had built this neo-classical house overlooking the River Lune. The archtect is unknown, but there were strong similarities to the work of John Webb.
This is the house depicted in this coloured engraving.
In 1869 the house was sold to Alfred Harris and demolished, a replacement being built fifty yards to th north.
Lunefield was a magnificent stone-built turreted and crenellated mansion constructed in the 1860s, in Kirkby Lonsdale, for Alfred Harris, a banker from Bradford. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the Gothic Revival architect and decorated with lavish state-of-the-art interiors and, in 1882, Willliam Morris and Company supplied stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne Jones depicting Lancelot and Elaine. The house and estate fell in to decline in the twentieth century and was eventually demolished in 1958.
