George Lyon and two accomplices were hanged on 22 April 1815 at Lancaster for a robbery at Westwood House, Ince, Wigan. The landlord of the Old Dog Inn, Simon Washington, carted his body back to the inn, from where it was taken the next day for burial in the nearby churchyard of St Thomas the Martyr church, surrounded by a huge crowd.
