Mr Beattie was born in January 1853 and was brought up at his parents' farm in Aberdeenshire until the age of 19 when he obtained employment on the North British Railway. In 1875 he found his vocation and joined the police force and upon joining the Lancashire Force he was stationed at Burnley which then also included Accrington. In 1883 (just 8 years after initially joining) he was appointed Chief Constable upon the death of Mr Walker and served in this post until he resigned in October 1903. He died on the 27th March 1908.
