General notes
In January 1914 Lord Ashton made a donation of £22,000 to the town and St.George's Gardens were renamed Ashton Gardens. After World War One the War Memorial was erected, again through the generosity of Lord Ashton. Ashton Theatre is just visible in the centre of the postcard. Sadly, it was burned in 1977 and never re-built. Re-development of Ashton Gardens began in 2009.
