On 23rd May 1888 the Lifeboat Monument was unveiled in St Annes to commemorate the bravery of the crews of the Laura Janet Lifeboat (the entire crew were lost) and the Eliza Fernley (2 crewman perished). Twenty-seven crewmen in all perished in the attempt to rescue the stricken barque, "Mexico of Hamburg" on December 9th, 1886. The postcard is addressed to Mrs. Vere, Weaste, Manchester. The message reads: "Dear Mother. Blackpool was crowded yesterday the sea grand. I am sure we look back for the change all ready. Baby looks bonny. We are coming home Thursday. Glad Tom & Ann like their postcards. Love from ?????? "
