The Railway Hotel and Railway Street were both built in 1849, the same year as the Railway Station was opened.
Built in a modest style it reflected the relative minor importance of the area then know as Hibson.
Over the next 50 years, the area had been transformed by the industrial revolution, the population of the new Town of Nelson increased from 6068 in 1951 to 44,045 in 1901.
