General notes
Richard Leigh of the Abbey in 1656 gave 52s annual rent for the benefit of the poor until a free school was built. Built 1659-60 and anyone with an income of £6. 13s.4d made a contribution and whose incomes were under that were entitled to send their children free of charge. in 1668 Robert Walthew of Pemberton gave the school farm at Newgate to guarantee an income of £24 per annum. During the Napoleonic wars it became a boarding school utilising a Georgian house near the church. In 1875 the upper school moved to a Georgian house half-a-mile away and the old building was sold for£200.
