The Esplanade, Morecambe
Morecambe
The area known today as Marine Road Central. As the road curves towards us, this is the area just before the turning to the road which finds the Gala Bingo of today. Known at that time as 'The Esplanade'
Taken in 1888, which wasn't long after the central Pier was built (1869) and appears to be a choice for those who either lived at that end, or preferred quieter areas.
Although the photograph appears very similar to those taken in the West End at that time, the distinguishing feature between the two is that the West End did have grass verges along the front, whereas the Esplanade did not.
This photograph does not.
Appears to be late spring or summer due to the use of umbrellas as parasols.
