General notes
The house of Lacy came over from Normandy with the Conqueror in 1066. In 1070 the forest of Blackburnshire, which included the forests of Pendle, Trawden, Accrington and Rossendale, came into the hands of Ilbert de Lacy, being the first baron of Clitheroe, As lords of the Hundred of Blackburn, or Honour of Clitheroe, the house of de Lacy exercised power and authority. Roger de Lacy held claim to Accrington, the power of this Norman baron was evident, when he allowed and granted Black Abbey to the monks of Kirkstall.
