General notes
The original hall was a half timbered building, erected about 1490. It is supposed that it was then the residence of the mortuary collector of Whalley Abbey. In the 16th century it was the home of the Morten family, and latter it was owned by the Nowells of Read, who sold it in 1772, to a Mr Hilton. In 1799 it was sold again to James Taylor, from whom it decended to Miss Pilling Taylor and Sir Henery[sic] Worsley Taylor, Bart. Moreton Hall is a noble building in a beautiful situation overlooking the river Calder. It was built after the designs by George Webster of Kendle[sic], who was also the architect for Read Hall in 1829. The Whalley Show was commenced in 1810, when Mr Taylor of Moreton Hall carried off prizes for the number of tree plantings.
