General notes
A group of gentlemen, probably regulars, posing for a photograph outside the Lane Ends Hotel. This pub can be dated to at least the 1840's, if not earlier. At this time it would have been known as The Bird in the Hand and it bore this name until c1884. During the development of Burnley's road network in 1926, this original building was demolished and replaced with a much grander structure. The Burnley Express 4 May 1966 reproduced this image and named the gentlemen as follows; Standing starting 3rd from Left:Alf ? , Herbert Harker, Walter Holt, Landlord Holden Heap, Mark Holland, ?, Mr. Riley, Richard Salkeld, Robert Buller, Mr. Earnshaw; Seated : ?, S. Barnes, G. Bailey, S. Wilkinson, ?, J. Lord, Mr Capstick, Mr. Chell, Mr. Smith, Mr. Madden; In Front Mr. Smith, Charles Wheadon, John Shaw, Mr. Williams. The photo was provided by Mrs. C. Fleming of Padiham, Granddaughter of Robert Buller and daughter of Charles Wheadon. Holden Heap died 29.4.1910 and was landlord from about 1892.
