Schooner Ryelands, later known as Moby Dick, was built by Nicholson & Marsh at Glasson Dock, launched on 11th January 1887 and registered at the Port of Lancaster.
Alfred Ernest Monsen (died 1999) - owned this ship for many years. He had a ship chandler's firm based in Plymouth, Devon where we believe it was moored and worked until it was sold.
In 1948 was bought by RKO Pictures and used in Walt Disney's film Treasure Island (1950). In 1954 bought by Elstree Studios for the film Moby Dick (1956), also used in the TV series The Buccaneers (1956).
Since 1960 was moored in Morecambe, opposite Brucciani's, as a floating exhibit.
Unfortunately, she was destroyed by fire in 1972.

'A complicated story...A E Monsen, who was of Norwegian and Swedish origin, was my father. My mother was Danish and worked for his firm in the 1950's onwards. He told me years ago about this ship and how he sold it to Disney studios. When I came to live near Lancaster and Morecambe in the late 1990's I realised this was the same ship.' 04/08/2023.
