General notes
This image appears in Robert Haley's book "Lytham St Annes: a pictorial history" (1995) (Image number 55) with this description: " A photograph by W. Kershaw, c.1886 looking from the site of the present St Anne's fire station inland, across the original links of Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. In the distance are Morningside and Stanley Villas in St Anne's Road East. The train is on its way to Blackpool" The engine in the picture is a 2-4-0 saddle tank locomotive designed by William Yates and built between 1869-73 at Newton Heath Locomotive Works and withdrawn for scrapping between1885-86. The railway tracks were made double in 1874 when the two lines at Lytham (1846 Preston & Wyre Railway from Kirkham and 1863 Blackpool & Lytham Railway) were connected. The signal post LHS has arms for trains in both directions of travel. This image is a copy taken from the collection of glass negatives in St Annes Library.
