General notes
Two workers tend to their looms in the weaving shed at Queen Street Mill.
The looms form the final part in the cotton weaving process. Here, the warp yarn, contained on a beam, has the weft passed through it by the shuttle. This creates the cloth. The machines are driven by the mill power plant and are connected to it via leather bands that attach to the driving mechanism that runs above the shop floor.
Weavers would tend between two and five looms, depending on the location and the type of cloth being made. Their jobs included piecing up the broken ends of warp and drawing them through the heald and reeds, filling the shuttles with weft, oiling and performing simple repairs.
