Riley, Rev. W. Thursby, Thomas Sandy, Thomas Brooks, George Sutcliffe, Sir John Hardy Thursby, John Thursby, Robert Tunstill, Mayor John Baron, Joshua Rawlinson, John Howarth, John Butterworth, Robert Brown, Tertius Dugdale, Anthony Buck Creeke, Charles Bailey, William Waddington, Angelo Waddington, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert Victor
The foundation stone for Burnley's first hospital, to be funded by donations large and small, was laid by Col. Thursby, on a site donated by the Rev. W. Thursby on the date of Queen Victoria's 65th birthday, Saturday 24th May 1884. . The collieries were closed for the occasion and the Saturday half day holiday meant a huge turnout, the Manchester Courier reported on 26.5.1884 that 10,000 children and 14,000 adults had attended. Information with the "instantaneous photo" names the dignitaries on the platform rather confusinglyas "L-R Thomas Sandy, Thomas Brooks, George Sutcliffe, Sir John Hardy Thursby, John Thursby, Robert Tunstill, Mayor John Baron, Joshua Rawlinson, John Howarth, John Butterworth, Robert Brown, Tertius Dugdale, Anthony Buck Creeke, Charles Bailey, William Waddington and possibly Angelo Waddington" . William Waddington was the architect of this and many of Burnley's major buildings of the time. Joshua Rawlinson can certainly be seen just behind the Mayor's left shoulder, John Butterworth is to the Mayor's immediate left; Col. John Thursby is holding the silver trowel and the mallet to lay the stone and is to the Mayor's immediate right. Anthony Buck Creeke is the gentleman with the extremely long beard. The hospital was opened by Prince Albert Victor in October 1886.
