This photograph shows pupils from the college, the two ponds, the Infirmary building to the left, the old Hall from the two Towers to the arched window to the right and St. Peter's Church. To the left of the Towers an extension was built in 1857. Sir Richard Shireburn started the building of Stonyhurst Hall in 1592 on the site of an earlier 13th century building. His son, also Richard, continued the work but built only half the mansion that was planned. Later additions were made by his great grandson, Sir Nicholas Shireburn, Bart, who built the cupolas on the Towers, added the ponds and laid out the gardens. Building work ended in 1702 with the death of Nicholas's son. The estate and house passedalong the female line through the Duke of Norfolk's family to the Weld family who eventually gave both to the Society of Jesus for the College. On the front of the two towers, in asending order, are columns of the four classical orders of architecture: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite.
