These cottages are typical of the dwellings built before the rise of the industrial system.
The Riley family were settled here in 1575 and are again mentioned as woollen weavers in 1650. One member of the Riley family was appointed by the corporation of Preston in 1675 to take charge of the workhouse there and superintended the manufacture of woollen material.
