General notes
There has been a building on this site since 1402 but the present property was built around the end of the 17th century. By the mid 1850s the property was home to Mr Hartley, a wealthy local cotton merchant, who ran his business from the house. Cotton was purchased from the local community and then stored on the third storey of the building prior to its transportation to the cities by road, rail and on the Leeds Liverpool canal.
This former residence was bought in 1982 by local businessman Kevin Berkins and opened as a pub/restaurant - The Fence gate Inn.
