James Fenwick. First school attendance officer for Accrington. The son of a hand-loom weaver, James Fenwick was a native of Haslingden, and whilst carrying on his business as a shoemaker, studied Theology under the Rev Joseph Harbottle and became minister of a Baptist Chapel in Cheshire. Returning to his native town, he became engaged in the scholastic profession, coming to Accrington, was appointed School Attendance Officer, a post he held for more than 20 years. He was a prominent member of the Particular Baptist Chapel in Peel Street, and later Barnes Street, and was a local preacher, occupying most of the pulpits in the district. He died January 29th 1895 age 67 years.
