General notes

Believed to have been built more than 500 years ago, it served as a hidden Catholic church. It was thought to be a safe retreat for martyrs. With the Reformation the Catholic community lost its only visible witness of the faith and it was not until around 1900 that Father Robert Smith began the work of using the cottage as a Catholic Chapel once again. There is a record of a Sunday school in existence at that time and in 1913 the first post-Reformation mass was said at the newly reopened church. Following the death of the priest in 1922 the church closed again.

After thus, the property was used as a bakehouse for a while, with a tearoom attached.
