The Chief constable of Accrington completed 50years service in the police force on July 31st 1928. He had been connected with the borough force ever since its formation in 1882 and held the position of Chief constable for nearly 24 years. He was born at , a small village in Perthshire in 1856. At the age of 20 he joined the county constabulary in 1877, was made detective sergeant at Accrington in 1882. In 1884 he was promoted to Inspector and in 1903 upon retirement of James Beattie was elected to Chief constable.
