General notes
In 1850, at a meeting of the inhabitants of Accrington, it was decided to erect a memorial to Sir Robert Peel. A company was formed, known as the Peel Institution and Market Company, which undertook the erection of the Peel Institution, but it was not a commercial success, and so a market not proceeded with. The site was purchased from Wm Dewhurst in 1854, and on it was built the institution, being opened on Christmas Eve 1858, when the Choral Society rendered "The Messiah." The architect was Mr James Green of Todmorden. Built in Classic style, it's massive porch with pediment supported on Corinthian columns forms an open balcony. The original cost was £11,000, purchased by the local board for £4,000.
