General notes
Rothwell Heights derives its name from a family of that name, who owned the old farm on the breast of the hill. In 1790, Henry Ellison had a dye house here, and Mr Sale, a fulling mill, which originated the later Rothwell Mill, of which only traces of the ruins can now be seen. It was one of the early industries of Accrington, before the advent of steam, when water power was utilised by means of the waterwheel. The Woodnook water was harnessed for the purpose.
