General notes

In ancient times, when the population was widely scattered, people lived in protected areas similar to Broad Oak Fold, for safety against their enemies, both man and animal. This group of homesteads received its name from a very old tree, which grew in the yard. It was a mighty tree for these parts, it's circumference being nine yards. And like many more old trees, it was hollow through decay, to such an extent that a cow could take shelter there. It was blown down during a fierce gale in 1817. A table made from this old oak tree is in the possession of Sir Henry Worsley Taylor, at Moreton Hall. The Walmersley family occupied the farm from the reign of Henry V111, to the beginning of the 18th Century, after which the Halsteads and Taylors lived here. James Taylor was one of the partners, at the commencement of Broad Oak Print Works in 1721
